Today we talk of “managing one’s boss,” and of having “relationships with strategic partners, suppliers and customers.” But, if partners can manage their relationships with each other, then management cannot be a one-sided, controlling activity. This is essentially what made management a top-down, restricting function. The focus on roles put all power in the hands of managers, who governed employees by planning, organizing and controlling their work. Industrial-age organizations were formal hierarchies that assigned specific roles to employees. Such a definition is not only a limiting one, it is one that does not account for the way in which work and responsibility has changed. Thus, when we define management as a role, we restrict it to something that refers to managers only. But in the case of knowledge workers, who manage themselves, management is seen as a process, one which can engage everyone. When we try to define management, our first thought is usually of a manager who occupies a role and who has authority over people. This author explains the “Why” and “How” of a new style of managing for today. This reality should force organizations that still cling to the old, top-down style of managing to recognize that many employees today are very capable of managing themselves. Don’t blame me for getting the original order incorrect. The # 2 that irked me really was when I overheard the same woman say that I didn’t want the other half and they’d eat it later. I didn’t get the other half, which is fine and would have gladly paid if she asked me. The sandwich and soup were great! 2 problems, 1. She said, «Oh well, I’ll just have to wrap up the other half» and my reply was thank you very much, thinking she was going to give me the other half once she wrapped it up. When the blond was done making the sandwich, it was a whole, not half. I had to repeat my choice of bread which was fine, but if she got the order right the first time, no problem… another gal got my cup of soup. I was excited to try the ½ Henny Penny egg salad sandwich and their tortilla soup… so when it was my turn to order, a blond haired lady asked me or my order– then decide she wanted to cut some meat and talk OVER me giving her my order. Thank you to Etched in Elegance and Robin for your help during this difficult time. She is a gem and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her or use her services again. She also made a point of finding out something he had been interested in and then brought plates and napkins that fit his interests. Robin not only delivered what was promised but she went above and beyond by making a couple of extra deserts as a special tribute to my dad. It’s hard to know how much food you will need for this type of gathering but with Robin’s suggestions we had plenty and the left overs were easily stored for overnight guests to enjoy the next day. The food was delicious and well presented. Robin was a tremendous help in offering suggestions and tips. I was in need of a caterer for a gathering after my father’s funeral, not a pleasant task. I cannot say enough good things about this catering company, specifically Robin. This review is actually for Etched in Elegance, the catering portion of Don’s Sandwich Shop.
